Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated Metrorail (MRT Line-6) on 28 December 2022. And through this, a new milestone has been added to the history of Bangladesh. Metrorail project was taken up in 2012 to avoid traffic jams in Dhaka city. Metrorail started working in 2017. 33 thousand 472 crore taka are being spent on the construction of metro rail.

Metrorail Fare List and ticket price
Metrorail minimum fare is Tk.20. After that after every two stations the fare will be added by 10 taka. The fare from Uttara station to Agargaon will be 60 taka. Click and use the calculator below to find out how much the fare is at any station in Dhaka Metrorail.
How to get metro rail ticket card
Initially, cards for permanent and single journeys have to be purchased from the metro rail station. Later can be recharged / purchased at various banks and online. There are two types of Metrorail tickets cards.

Permanent card: 10 years permanent card should be purchased for 200 taka. Recharge money for travel as needed. Registration is required to get permanent card. Dhaka Metrorail Permanent Pass Card registration form is given below.

Single Journey Card: The required fare must be paid before the journey. It will be taken back from the passenger while getting off the train. You cannot leave the station without giving the card.
Some more information regarding tickets/cards:
- There is no half fare facility for students. But everyone will get 10 percent discount if they take a permanent card.
- Single Journey Ticket and MRT Pass can be purchased from the Ticket Office Machine (TOM) with the help of the ticket officer.
- Passengers can purchase Single Journey Ticket and MRT Pass Top-up automatically from Ticket Vending Machine (TVM). MRT Pass Top-up can also be done through Mobile and Web Applications.
- Single Journey Ticket can be purchased by paying the fare fixed by the government according to the travel distance.
- MRT Pass and Rapid Pass will be subject to fare deductions as per the travel distance as determined by the government.
- At any time, passengers can return the MRT Pass and get a refund of the deposit and unused amount.
What to do if Metrorail pass / ticket card is lost?
If the MRT Pass is lost or damaged, the registered cardholder must pay a deposit and receive a new MRT Pass. In this case the unused amount will be automatically transferred to the new MRT Pass. If the MRT Pass is lost, the illegal use of the registered card can be stopped by informing the TOM operator of the nearest station.

Dhaka metro rail off day and schedule time
According to the new schedule, the metro rail will run from 8 am to 8 pm from May 31.
For the first few days after the inauguration, the Metrorail ran from 8.30 am to 2 pm. However, it has been decided to extend the period from 31 May 2023 to 8 pm instead of 12 noon.
- Metrorail will depart every 10 minutes from 8 am to 11 pm.
- Metrorail will depart every 15 minutes from 11 am to 3 pm.
- Metrorail will depart every 10 minutes from 3pm to 6pm.
- Metrorail will leave every 15 minutes from 6 am to 8 am.
- metro rail closing time is 8 pm.
- Stopping at Uttara and Agargaon stations after inauguration.
- Stopping at Pallavi station from 25th January 2023.
- Stopping at Uttara Center or station number two from 18 February 2023.
- Stopping at Mirpur station number 10 from March 1, 2023.
- Stopping at Kazipara and Mirpur-11 stations from 15 March 2023.
- Stopping at Uttara Dakshin and Sheorapara stations from 31 March 2023.
- Motijheel to Agargaon section operational from 20 October 2023
Security system of Metrorail
- Communication Based Train Control System (CBTC) Automatic Train Operation (ATO), Automatic Train Protection (ATP), Automatic Train Supervision (ATS) and Moving Block System (MBS) have been included to ensure control and safety of Metrorail.
- Synchronized Platform Screen Door (PSD) and Train Door and CCTV cameras are included for passenger safety. There is an emergency exit to get out in case of emergency.
- Automatic sprinkler and water hydrant addition system has been kept as fire fighting system. The process of forming a separate specialized MRT Police Force is underway to ensure safe travel of passengers traveling on the Metrorail. Until then Dhaka Metropolitan Police will provide security.
The country’s first woman metro rail driver
The country’s first woman metro rail driver is Maryam Afiza of Karpara Union of Ramganj Upazila of Laxmipur. He passed his post graduation from Noakhali University of Science and Technology Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.
Names of Japanese Engineers at Metrorail Stations
Seven Japanese engineers were killed on 01 July 2016 while working on the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit project. The names of these seven engineers are:
- Hashimoto Hideki
- Kurosaki Nobuhiro
- Ogasawara Koyo
- Okamuro Makoto
- Sakai Yuko
- Shimodaira Rui
- Tanaka Hiroshi
In tribute to them, their names are engraved on stones in three languages (Bengali, English and Japanese) at Metrorail stations.
Metrorail Exhibition and Information Centre
There is a Metrorail exhibition and information center at Uttara Diabari in Dhaka. Its schedule and other information is given below
- Exhibition Timings: Monday to Saturday 10.30 am, 12.00 pm and 3.00 pm
- Weekly Closed: Sunday
- Exhibition Topics: Video, Animated Cartoons, Automatic Ticketing Machine Usage, Manual Ticketing System, Metro Train Design, Automated Mini Metro Trains, Automatic Entry and Exit Gates, Pictorial Display Board, Memorial to 07 Japanese Citizens Killed in Holy Artisan Incident Monument etc
- Entry fee: 10 (ten) taka per person. However, brave freedom fighters, persons with special physical needs and students do not have to pay the entry fee subject to showing the identity card of the educational institution.
Punishment for damage to Metrorail

Obstructing the construction, development, operation and maintenance of Metrorail: shall be punishable with imprisonment for one year or with fine not exceeding 5 lakh taka or with both.

Entry into reserved area of Metrorail without permission: Imprisonment for five years or fine not exceeding Tk 50 lakh or both.

Any act which endangers the safety of Metrorail or passengers: Imprisonment for five years or fine not exceeding Tk 50 lakh or both.

Forging metro rail ticket or pass: 10 years imprisonment or fine of one crore taka or both.

Obstructing inspector in performance of duty, furnishing misleading information: Imprisonment for two years with fine not exceeding Tk 10 lakh or with both.

Metro rail travel without ticket or pass: 10 times fine of fare. Imprisonment for 6 months without fine.

In case of crimes under 32, 33, 34, 37, 38 and 40 of this law (Act No. 59 of 29) can be tried by mobile court.
Metrorail tickets are VAT free
No VAT on metro rail tickets till June 30, 2024. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has taken this decision to withdraw Value Added Tax (VAT).
Advertising campaign inside Metrorail
The agreement between Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited and advertising agency Mediacom Limited was signed on September 14, 2023 for advertising campaign activities within Metrorail. Through this agreement, Mediacom Limited has been allowed to carry out advertising campaign activities exclusively within Metrorail.
